Abstract:
Based on interviews with Lopper, a Jew from Vienna, describes the selection process at the Auschwitz ramp. Lopper was born in 1919, married in 1940, and in August 1942 was deported to Auschwitz, where his wife perished. As a member of the "Canada" commando, Lopper worked at the Auschwitz ramp. Despite the risks involved, he and other workers tried to help arriving Jews. Describes the greater efficiency of the selection process at the new ramp in Birkenau from spring 1943, the arrival of large numbers of Hungarian transports in 1944, the lack of resistance at the ramp, and the role of the "Canada" commando workers in maintaining order. In July 1944, although he had been transferred to another work unit, Lopper saved his mother's life by helping her survive the selection at the ramp.
