Abstract:
The paper demonstrates that although few compositions in Classical Ethiopic (Gəʿəz) are devoted specifically to David, or attributed to him, he is a significant figure in Ethiopian culture and tradition. It argues that his importance and popularity depend on the fact that he is regarded as the author of Psalms and that he is connected to the sphere of the cult of Mary as one of her ancestors. It also shows that even more impressive testimonies of David’s importance can be found in iconographic representations. The article offers a synthetic overview and analysis of diverse unstudied or understudied sources.
