Abstract:
States that in postwar Poland antisemitism constituted an instrument in the struggle for political power, with no relation to the number of Jews in the country. Recalls the Kielce pogrom, used in order to discredit the right-wing opposition; the campaign against Zionists in 1948; the purges of Jewish communists in 1953 under Bierut; and the expulsion of Jews from the Communist Party (1956) and the civil service (1968) under Gomulka. Political antisemitism resurfaced at the time of the syndicalist unrest in 1981 and during the recent free elections.
