Abstract:
Discusses Holocaust education in high schools in Israel and the effect on students of the trip to Poland which has become part of the 11th grade curriculum since 1991. Focuses on results of a survey carried out amongst 147 students in five high schools; 94 of the students went to Poland and 53 did not. The survey shows that both the pre-journey preparation and the experiences in Poland greatly increased the students' knowledge about the Holocaust. However, although emotional responses were intense during the trip, these soon faded after the students' return, and the experience did not bolster Jewish identity.
