Abstract:
Hundreds of German universities trained scholars in the field of eugenics; these later decided the fate of millions of people during the Nazi regime. Pp. 334-340 examine how raciology was used to classify and select Jews from the beginning of the 20th century until 1945. Between 1910-40 raciologists, realizing that Jews could not be physically identified, traced "Rassenfremdheit" to mental traits, which they claimed had evolved through a process of selection. Before 1933 racial hygienists, not wanting to offend their many Jewish colleagues, characterized Jews as different, not inferior. Their supposed innate talent for social success, however, was perceived as threatening German society. As a result of the biologization and racialization of the "Jewish problem", the elimination of the Jews from Europe was proposed as a solution. The Nazis, unable to identify the Jews racially, made do with genealogical definitions. Describes the role of academic experts in categorizing unclear cases. Concludes that racial genetics owes its scientific development to its use in the law court for determining paternity and its usefulness as a tool for Nazi racism. Pp. 346-388 contain lists of academic raciologists, including Jews, stating where and what they taught, and their fate.
