Abstract:
Peixotto was an American Jew of Sephardic Dutch descent. Peixotto. He was appointed by President Grant as the American Consul to Bucharest and served there from 1871-1876. He made significant attempts to relieve the plight of Romanian Jews who were suffering from discrimination and antisemitism. Discusses and presents unedited (until now) documents of correspondence between Peixotto and the Alliance Israélite Universelle in France in regard to the Jews in Romania.
