Abstract:
Describes the use of gas vans for mass killing of Jews and others in the Nazi-occupied areas of the USSR between 1941-43. The vans (approximately 15 in number) were attached to Einsatzkommando units of all four Einsatzgruppen. Gives details regarding how the idea of murder by exhaust fumes developed, the types of trucks used, the locations where they were used (in Belarus, Ukraine, and Crimea), and the names of the officers responsible in the various towns. The over-all commander of operations was Walter Rauff (he died in 1984 in Chile), head of the Technical Division in the RSHA. Posits that ca. 400,000 persons (mostly Jews) were murdered in gas vans in the USSR. Based on eyewitness accounts found in the German archives at Ludwigsburg and testimony given at war crimes trials (often by the drivers of the vans) in the USSR and in Germany.
