Abstract: The second half of the 15th century saw outbursts of disturbances against Conversos in Andalusia, carried out as part of the confrontation between the Andalusian urban aristocracy and the Castilian Crown. Conversos were viewed as being on the side of the Crown because they enjoyed privileges granted by the Crown and many of them acted as tax collectors at a time when the Crown increased tax pressures on Andalusian cities. The disturbances resulted in the introduction of strong restrictions on the holding of public office by Conversos, their dispersion from Andalusian urban centers to villages, and their emigration to other parts of Spain. The tribunal of the Inquisition was established in Andalusia in 1478 and began its activities in 1481. According to available sources, between 1488-97 ca. 6,000 Conversos were reconciled to the Church by the Inquisition and suffered various degrees of punishment. Asserts that, since the Converso population of Andalusia oscillated at that time between 60-75,000 persons, actions of the Inquisition were actually restricted to a minority of Conversos; the vast majority of them assimilated into Andalusian and Spanish society. Concludes that the fact that most of the Conversos were not affected by the Inquisition proves that the aim of the Inquisition was not persecution of the Conversos as an ethnic, racial group, but the uprooting of Judaism as a religion.
