Abstract:
Examines the anti-Jewish passages in Paul's Epistles, in particular I Thessalonians 2,14-16. These passages echo, in part, derogatory Roman characterizations of Jews, and may reflect Paul's attempt to adopt the language of his Gentile audiences - but they had far-reaching and dangerous historical consequences. Other passages decrying circumcision - also in accord with pagan prejudices - perhaps expressed, in addition, a convert's repudiation of his own past; they were later wrongly generalized to imply condemnation of Jewish Law as a whole. These passages contradict more balanced references to Jews in the Epistle to the Romans, and are to be deplored as deviations in Paul's thought.
