Abstract:
Compares the Holocaust with six other instances of persecution - the witch hysteria of the 15th-17th centuries, the destruction of North American Indians, Black slavery, and the Nazi persecution of gypsies, homosexuals, and East European groups - in an effort to distinguish the phenomenological characteristics of each. Concludes that fundamental factors differentiate the Holocaust from these other cases, in which there were horrifyingly large casualty figures, but the Jews alone were the victims of a total genocidal onslaught in both intent and implementation.
