Abstract:
Describes the persecution of the Portuguese Marranos in Latin America, viewing the Dutch occupation of northern Brazil between 1620-54 as a campaign encouraged by ex-Marranos from the Netherlands and the partly Jewish-owned Dutch West Indies company. After the retreat of the Dutch, many Brazilian Jews who had returned to Judaism emigrated. Others, who remained as Crypto-Jews, fell victim to the Inquisition's revenge. This episode is seen as an example of Jewish self-defense and struggle against oppressors.
