Abstract:
The rise of the functionalist trend, particularly among West German historians, in explaining the Final Solution has reduced the emphasis on Nazi antisemitism. Uwe Dietrich Adam, in the wake of revisionist David Irving, has presented extermination camps as the only option left to the Nazis to carry out their commitment to cleanse Germany of Jews when emigration became impossible. A second debate was sparked off by the Bitburg Affair and Hillgruber's book "Zweielei Untergang" (1986). Fest, Nolte, and recently Robert Conquest in Britain, compare Hitler's persecution of the Jews with Lenin's persecution of the bourgeoisie. Their attempt to neutralize the Nazi past is an aspect of renewed German national sentiment.
