Abstract:
Comments on the controversy aroused among French intellectuals by the publication of Farias' "Heidegger et le nazisme" (see above). Most of the facts mentioned in Farias' book have been known in Germany for many years. However, French supporters of Heidegger's thought have fiercely resisted the suggestion that his support for Nazism and failure to grapple with the consequences of Nazi ideology, including the Holocaust, indicate a deep flaw in his philosophy. Their defense tends to serve the recent trend towards minimizing the importance of the Holocaust. Nevertheless, argues that Farias' book is one-sided and polemical, presenting Heidegger's positions as a Nazi and antisemite from his youth up to the time of his death on the basis of dubious evidence. Calls for a more serious investigation of Heidegger's philosophical position on the modern world and Nazism.
