Kurzfassung:
Margit Slachta was a social activist in Hungary, founder of the Catholic Women's Party, and an MP between 1920-22 and 1945-48. During the deportations from Slovakia in 1942, she urged Church and secular authorities to intervene; she even obtained a papal audience through the help of Francis Cardinal Spellman. Pope Pius XII subsequently ordered Slovak bishops to protest and the deportation of the remaining 25,000 Jews, scheduled for 1943, was postponed. When it was resumed in 1944, the organization Slachta had founded in 1923, the Society of the Sisters of Social Service, rescued more than 1,000 people. Her nonconformist actions resulted in her ouster from public life and eventual emigration to the U.S. Pp. 59-69 contain letters written by Slachta to Cardinal Spellman describing the situation of Jews in Slovakia.
