Kurzfassung:
In 1933 the Lebanese Maronite Patriarch, Anton Butros Arida, published an open letter condemning Nazi Germany's persecution of Jews. He apparently supported the Beirut Jewish community's request to allow 50,000 Jewish refugees to enter Lebanon. Most Lebanese favored the admission of a small number of wealthy Jews. The Maronite elite feared Jewish competition and possible eruptions of Arab hostility due to the Palestine conflict. Most Catholics believed that the Vatican approved of Germany's anti-Jewish policies. Sunni Arabs opposed Jewish immigration, out of solidarity with the Palestinian Arabs. Eventually the French authorities rejected refugee admission, fearing political complications.
