Kurzfassung:
Analyzes a collection of stories written between 1945-60 by Erich Fried, who left Austria for England in 1938. The starting point for the book was the sentencing to death of Irma Grese (a concentration camp guard) during the Belsen war crimes trials in 1945. The book's central story involves the love between Helga, a beautiful camp guard, and a Jewish émigré serving in the American army. After Helga's execution, the soldier writes stories and observations expressing his guilt and sense of loss. Examines the relation of Fried's writing to mainstream German postwar literature.
