Abstract:
Analyzes the transcendental nature of the Holocaust in historical discourse. Argues that there is a tension between a transcendental event, to which the proper response can only be silence, and an historical event which may be discussed but may also be questioned or reinterpreted. Contends that attempts to redefine the Holocaust to preserve its uniqueness in light of the Armenian genocide of 1915 bring the Holocaust into history and deny it transcendental status.
