Abstract:
Presents the findings of two polls conducted in November-December 1990 among adults and secondary-school students in former East Germany by the School of Economics and Social Sciences of Erlangen-Nuremberg University in cooperation with the "Tribüne". The polls revealed that about 80% of East Germans are not at all, or only slightly, antisemitic. Estimates the "hard core" of antisemites at about 6%. However, factor analysis shows a greater clustering of general ethnic prejudice. Perceptions of "typical" German and Jewish characteristics do not markedly differ. Assent to statements expressing antisemitic prejudice runs from 6-18%. Where comparison with previous polls in West Germany is possible, the East Germans appear to be less antisemitic.
