Abstract: Discusses Spiegelman's "Maus, " a two-volume cartoon account of his parents' survival of the Holocaust, in connection with Philip Roth's references to the Holocaust in his prose. Mentions that for contemporary American Jewry, the Holocaust serves as the dominant metaphor for collective and individual Jewish identity. States that Spiegelman transgresses the sacredness of Auschwitz by depicting his father's suffering in comics form and by refusing to sentimentalize the survivor.
