Abstract:
Traces the history of the Jews in the Baltic countries - Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia - from the establishment of the Jewish communities in the 16th century up to the present. Describing the Holocaust period, explains the complicated internal situation due to the support given by a significant number of Baltic Jews to the Soviet troops who occupied these countries in 1940. In 1941 the Nazis were treated as "liberators" by the Baltic population. Most of the Baltic Jews perished in concentration camps or were killed by Einsatzgruppen. Mentions the renaissance of Jewish life from the 1980s due to the liberalization of social life in the USSR under Gorbachev.
