Abstract:
Discusses the riots against Jews in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, NY, during 19-23 August 1991, focusing on the reactions of Jewish organizations and the Black establishment. The Jewish establishment avoided any public confrontation, preferring appeasement. It regarded the riots as a local problem. The Black establishment's hesitant voice was lost in the dominant antisemitic rhetoric of Black militants and their populist leadership. Black antisemites aim their attacks against whites in the direction of the Jews, sensing weakness in the Jews' insecurity regarding their American identity. Although the Black establishment publicly supports, now and then, Jewish and Israeli ventures (such as "Operation Solomon" for the rescue of Ethiopian Jews, and Blacks lobbying together with Jews in Congress), the Blacks in general tend more and more to follow the populists and militants who have adopted the most vicious antisemitic attitudes.
