Abstract:
A biography of the author's father, Loeb David Maier, from 1919 a chemistry teacher at a secondary school in Freiburg i.Br. and a leading member of the Jewish community, later its head. Describes his increasing social isolation at the school and his dismissal in 1936; his work for the Jewish community during the Nazi period, including the organization of an elementary school and of cultural activities; his deportation to Dachau after the "Kristallnacht" pogrom; and the family's last-minute emigration to England. His sister Klara was deported to Gurs and died there.
