Abstract:
Describes the Nazi German euthanasia program (T4) and notes that its official (though not actual) discontinuation coincided with the beginning of the Final Solution, adding that most of the staff in the extermination camps, including the camp commanders, were transferred from T4, which continued to employ them and to receive the valuables taken from the Jews and other prisoners. Traces the career of Dr. Christian Wirth, from his participation in the first gassing of psychiatric patients in Brandenburg to his overseeing of construction of gas chambers in Bełżec and his appointment as inspector of the extermination camps. Also quotes from Kurt Gerstein's description of a gassing.
