Abstract:
Surveys acts of the sejmiks (regional sejms) and analyzes attitudes of the Polish nobility toward the Jews in the second half of the 17th century. States that most Polish nobles had a positive attitude towards the Jews, which can be proved by the development of the Jewish communities on the nobility’s estates. However, striking examples of hostility can be found in these documents as well. Quotes from sejmik documents in which some nobles demanded the expulsion of the Jews from various regions of Poland; sometimes the demand was motivated by a host desecration accusation. Concludes that the demand for expulsion was, in fact, a pretext for increasing the Jews’ taxation. The Jews paid more taxes and were not expelled.
