Abstract:
A lecture based on the author's book "Die Wunde Deutschland: Heinrich Heines Dichtung im Widerstreit von Nationalidee, Judentum und Antisemitismus" (Frankfurt a.M.: Insel, 1990). Despite emancipation, antisemitism increased in Germany in the first decades of the 19th century. The German national consciousness was aroused and German Jews, such as Heine, suffered from identity problems. After his conversion, Heine felt rejected by Jews and by Christians, both of whom despised his behavior. Literary criticism of Heine's works was interspersed with antisemitic remarks, though most of his writings reflected German patriotism. After Heine's death, his works were described by Heinrich von Treitschke and others as intended to drag German culture into the mud.
