Abstract:
A lecture given at a conference organized by the Polish Episcopal Commission for Dialogue with Judaism and B'nai B'rith, Tyniec, Poland, April 1988. Discusses recent changes in Christian-Jewish relations and in the Christian view of Judaism since the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel. In view of the Church's tradition of antisemitism, Christian writers are attempting to understand the Bible, Jewish history and thought in Jewish terms, to revise the thesis that the Church has replaced Israel as God's chosen people, and to present Jesus and his messianic claims in their Jewish context, modifying the accusation that the Jews obstinately rejected Christ. Emphasizes the contribution of "Nostra Aetate" in cancelling the traditional accusation of deicide, and the growth of dialogue and theological reorientation in recent years.
