Abstract:
Discusses the presence of Spanish and especially Portuguese Conversos in Chile, stating that many of the "founding fathers" of this nation were of Jewish descent. There was no tribunal of the Inquisition in Chile, but reports on the Conversos were sent to the tribunal in Lima beginning in 1572. States that despite local complaints against the growing number of "Jews", due to the lack of white colonists and soldiers willing to settle in Chile, there were few trials for Judaizing, most of them during the 17th century at the request of the Inquisition authorities in Spain or Buenos Aires. Includes personal data on many Chilean Conversos.
