Abstract:
Despite the Concordat concluded between the Vatican and Germany in 1933, Pope Pius XI did not fail to speak out against Nazi racism. Pius XII, who was elected to the Papacy in 1939, never condemned the persecution and the annihilation of the Jews and other groups in occupied Europe, despite the fact that he had full knowledge of it, and despite the numerous appeals to him to raise his voice. The actions on behalf of the persecuted undertaken by bishops in occupied countries succeeded in saving many Jews. The silence of Pius XII may be explained by the anti-Bolshevist stance of the Catholic Church, and its belief that Bolshevism was initiated by Jews and that Nazism was an acceptable price for the defense of civilization (and of the Church itself). Notes that traditional Catholic antisemitism must also be taken into account.
