Abstract:
Criticizes Tom Segev's historiographic methodology and the conclusions in his book "The Seventh Million"(1991). Discusses Brand's mission to save Hungarian Jewry in 1944 and why it failed, contending that Segev's description of the events is a case of historical revisionism when he denigrates the Zionist leadership and blames it for a failure which was due to unavoidable circumstances. Shows that Segev's critique of the motives and actions of Zionist leaders is contrary to the historical facts concerning attempts to rescue European Jewry. Segev suggests various rescue options not undertaken by the Jewish Agency; the authors show that these options were all considered, but that they could not be implemented for different reasons, among them the imminent Allied invasion of Normandy and the lack of funds. Contends that the entire book is written in the revisionist vein in an attempt to find a scapegoat for the ills of Israeli society and modern-day Judaism.
