Abstract:
The academic work of the Orientalist and Bible scholar J.D. Michaelis (1717-1791) had racial antisemitic implications that involved German Orientalist fantasies of both intellectual domination and colonial power over the Jews. Draws a parallel between Edward Said's study of the European quest for intellectual hegemony and colonial domination of the Orient. Michaelis, an 18th-century pioneer of Bible scholarship, viewed contemporary Jews as an anachronism. In contrast to those who wanted to encourage Jewish emancipation, Michaelis proposed that imperial Germany be supported by the slave labor of Jews, whom he considered racially degenerate.
