Abstract:
Summarizes the theories of Frankl (psychologist and Holocaust survivor) regarding people's "will to meaning, " and the capacity for hope and love as important conditions for surviving in the concentration camp. Presents the responses of six Holocaust survivors who were interviewed on this subject. While each survivor described strong family ties, the actual importance of the love relationship for the survivor varied. The idea of a beloved, or the desire to be reunited with his or her family, was a recurring theme amongst all the interviewees, but other themes (e.g. desire to live, good luck) were equally important.
