Abstract:
Describes the literary form of the "Bildungsroman, " that genre of fiction which treats a young man's initiation into adulthood through experiences which lead to moral, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual growth. Elie Wiesel's "Night" inverts this process. What begins as a life rich in culture, heritage, and open-ended possibilities ends in impoverishment, isolation, anguish, and lost faith in the hell of Buchenwald.
Note:
Appeared as "'Night' is the antithesis of the traditional coming-of-age story" in "Genocide in Elie Wiesel's Night" (2009) 59-66.
