Abstract:
Argues that the "Theological Dictionary of the New Testament" (TDNT), a translation of the German "Theologisches Wörterbuch zum Neuen Testament" (1933-79) is a very dangerous book. These volumes were produced in Germany when antisemitism was at its height, in the Nazi period. Scholars nonetheless continue to repeat their contents without proper critical assessment. Since its editor-in-chief, Gerhard Kittel, and a number of major contributors were Nazis, users of the TDNT should be aware of their prejudices and assumptions. For example, K.G. Kuhn projected the "Jewish problem" back to the ancient world, where he portrayed Judaism as being responsible for Jew-hatred. In an article on prayer, Walther Grundmann attempted to separate Jesus from the Judaism of his time and to claim that he was "Aryan" ("a Galileean"). Even non-Nazi contributors to the TDNT, like Rudolf Bultmann, are shown to have suffered from traditional German Christian antisemitism.
