Abstract:
Relates the case of a five-year-old child, Stefan Balla, from the town of Orkut (or Orkucany, in Slovakia), whose body was found in June 1764. 30 Jews of Polish origin were arrested for murder; 22 were set free. The main defendants were Jacob Lefkovics, who was tortured to death, and Moses Josefovics, who agreed to convert to Christianity. In April 1765 the court's sentence stated that Lefkovics had atoned for his crime by death, and Josefovics by torture. He and the others were set free. There was no evidence that any of them were involved in the child's death. The accusation arose due to the local populace's envy and hatred of the Polish Jewish immigrants who had fled from persecution in Galicia and succeeded in establishing themselves in Hungary.
