Abstract:
Compares Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners" (1996) with Edouard Conte and Cornelia Essner's "La quête de la race: Une anthropologie du nazisme" (1995). Contrasts Goldhagen's thesis of "eliminationist antisemitism" with Conte/Essner's focus on the "Nordic dogma of the races". Doubts the utility of Goldhagen's lengthy discussion of the history of antisemitism and his emphasis on violence, and criticizes Goldhagen's vociferous stance couched in language unusually simplistic and subjective for an anthropological work. Concedes that both Goldhagen and Conte/Essner succeed in their attempt to dissect Nazi ideology and practice, yet prefers the latter's analysis of Nazi ideology. Concludes that efforts to comprehend Nazism in the larger context of the battle for the survival of the Nordic race could serve as a deterrent message to humanity for the future.
