Abstract:
On the German payroll during World War II, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem made pro-Axis radio broadcasts to the Arab world, assisted in the development of an Arab legion in the German army, recruited Soviet Muslims to fight alongside the Nazis, and organized the 20,000-strong Bosnian Muslim "Handschar" division of the SS which committed innumerable atrocities against Bosnian Serbs. On his own initiative, the Mufti repeatedly attempted to interfere with negotiations for the ransom of Jewish refugees from the Nazis, and planned to harm Palestinian Jewry. Recent "scholarship" has distorted the evidence and produced accounts which minimize or even justify the Mufti's Nazi activities and argue that the description of him as a "war criminal" is unfair. Contends that the Mufti was, in fact, a war criminal and was driven in his pro-Nazi undertakings by his deep hatred for the Jews and his desire to help in the German war of annihilation against them. See the response by Philip Mattar [ibid. 18, 1 (1997) 105-112], in which he states that no extant documents support the opinion that the Mufti's activities influenced Nazi policy toward the Jews. Criticizes both Zionist and Arab historiographers of the Mufti.
