Abstract:
Describes the character of Spanish villagers as reflected in early Spanish dramatic works. Authors such as Juan del Encina, Gil Vicente, and Bartolomé de Torres Naharro criticized and ridiculed the hypocrisy and bad morals of those pretending to be good Christians who violated all the Christian commandments but at the same time blamed Conversos for not respecting these same commandments. The villagers are described as rejoicing at the sight of the autos-de-fe, after having denounced Conversos for Judaizing.
Note:
Relates to hatred of Conversos depicted in the theater.
