Abstract: Compares use of the term "servants of the king" in reference to Jews in medieval Germany to the term's significance in the context of Aragon. Notes the influence of Christian anti-Jewish theology in Aragon, including the idea of the Jews as eternal servants of the Christians, and the prevalence of anti-Jewish polemics. Concludes that in the frontier territory of Aragon, with its Muslims, it was less the Church than the secular ruler and his utilitarian, economic interests that determined the Jews' role as servants of the king. This argument partly depends on the parallel treatment the Aragonese law stipulated for Muslims and Jews.
