Abstract:
Traces the roots of the "bio-ideologies" of fascism and German Nazism to late 19th century ideas of Social Darwinism and eugenics. Josef Mengele symbolized Dr. Death. His medical experiments and the Nazi genocide of the Jews reflected a view of science that was based on the assumption of the superiority of the Aryan race. This idea of a superman who experiments on and tortures "lower" creatures was first embodied in H.G. Wells' "The Island of Doctor Moreau" (1896). Discusses, also, the short story "Mengele" (1989) by Lucius Shepard.
