Abstract:
Examines essays by non-Jewish and Jewish Hungarian writers, comparing their attitudes toward the Holocaust. The non-Jewish writers (Árpád Göncz, Szabolcs Szita, Ferenc Glatz, and Géza Komoróczy) view the Holocaust in Hungary as part of Hungarian history, and the suffering of the Jews as part of Hungarian suffering during the war. The Jewish writers (Iván Beer, Áron Hoffmann, Imre Kertész, and György Konrád), on the other hand, see it as a distinctly Jewish experience and a basis for Jewish identity. Discusses, also, reactions to István Szabó's film "Sunshine" (2000), which indicate that there is a large gap between Jews and non-Jews in Hungary, particularly in their views on the Holocaust.
