Abstract:
Despite his dislike of Judaism as a religion in his youth, his withdrawal from the Jewish community in 1912, and his subsequent conversion to Catholicism, Alfred Döblin remained faithful to Judaism in his own way. Notes that from his earliest childhood onwards he was confronted with antisemitism time and again. He felt himself a Jew and preserved an interest in Jewish life and culture, and even in Zionism. In 1933 Döblin was forced to emigrate from Germany.
