Abstract:
A critique of the reaction of the rhetorician Judith Butler to the speech of Harvard University president Lawrence Summers (in 2002) regarding antisemitism and anti-Zionism, in which he warned of "people advocating and taking actions that are anti-Semitic in their effect if not their intent". Expresses disappointment at Butler's logical fallacies and at failures in her rhetorical analysis, concluding that she was irresponsible, because she confused rather than clarified issues and because her words might lead to an increase in antisemitism. Notes Summers' distinctions between antisemitism and anti-Zionism on the one hand and legitimate criticism on the other.
