Abstract: The first Soviet attempt to investigate and record Nazi crimes in the German-occupied territories was made in early 1942. In March 1943 the Extraordinary State Commission was established, which marked the beginning of a more systematic examination of Nazi crimes in the USSR. Before it was disbanded in 1945, the Commission, inter alia, investigated the mass murder of Jews by the Nazis. Describes the ESC investigation of Nazi crimes, focusing on the Holocaust; examines ESC activities in Crimea and in the region of Kiev. Jewish martyrdom was reflected in preliminary reports compiled before mid-1944; later, references to the Holocaust gradually disappeared from ESC reports. There was a tendency to diminish the number of victims, both Jewish and non-Jewish, in the final reports compiled in 1944-45; some important Holocaust sites were deleted from the final ESC reports. Presents possible explanations for this policy of the Soviets at the end of the war.
