Abstract:
Raises doubts about whether "Against Apion" should be considered a specimen of a whole genre of pre-existing but now lost, Jewish literature. also in contrast to the prevailing view, instead of connecting the work with the antisemitic attitudes in Greek Alexandria, ties it to Josephus' own time, 50 years later, in Rome after the destruction of the Temple. The Roman emperors in Josephus' time favored propaganda that denigrated the Jews. Josephus defended the Jews by noting values they had in common with the Romans as opposed to the degenerate Greeks, and argued that the Romans should allow the Temple to be rebuilt.
