Abstract:
For years, Hans Meiser, Lutheran bishop of Bavaria, was celebrated for his heroic defense of the Church's independence during the Nazi period. But in 2006, when the Church planned ceremonies in honor of the 50th anniversary of his death, there were protests, especially from the Jewish community. The protesters recalled the bishop's proximity to the Nazis and his racist, not merely religious, antisemitism. Already in 1926 he had published an article warning that Jews were a danger to Germany and must be eliminated from German society by renewed ghettoization. He continued to make racist pronouncements throughout the Nazi period. He disseminated a lecture by the biblical scholar Gerhard Kittel asserting that the Jews were condemned already in the Old Testament. He remained silent on the persecution of the Jews and did not respond to a plea by an anti-Nazi group of his diocese to preach against it. After the war, he refused to admit guilt or to apologize.
