Abstract:
Discusses Klüger's "weiter leben: Eine Jugend" (1992), Reich-Ranicki's "Mein Leben" (1999), and Spiegel's "Wieder zu Hause? Erinnerungen" (2001). While their Holocaust experiences - involving Auschwitz and Theresienstadt, the Warsaw ghetto and its Judenrat, and being hidden as a child in Belgium, respectively - are important in understanding the three personalities and their ambivalences about Germany, Lubich focuses on their survival and subsequent success. The lives of the three reflect the long history of Jewish integration into and identification with Germany. Their longings for their lost Heimat were expressed in their roles as mediators between Jews and Germans and in their efforts to promote German culture.
