Abstract:
Analyzes the reaction of Marshall, president of the American Jewish Committee, to Ford's "Protocols of the Elders of Zion"-based antisemitism published in his "Dearborn Independent" from 1920 through Ford's retraction in 1927. Discusses Marshall's strategy, his reasons for rejecting libel suits in favor of galvanizing public opinion, and the success of that strategy, which emphasized American values, at that time and later in American Jewish history. Originally, there were proponents of a low-profile approach within the AJC. Marshall did not wish to give publicity to antisemitic views by debating them, nor to take the risk of a jury trial, where the majority might be swayed to agree with Ford's antisemitism. Marshall succeeded in persuading the American millionaire and public figure that it was in his own interest to dissociate himself from the views that he had widely publicized and that were quoted even by the Nazis.
