Abstract:
In the 1950s many dramatists wrote plays that included Nazi perpetrators as characters, in order to confront Germans with this difficult and suppressed memory. This was also Sylvanus's intention in including in the play the story of the SS officer in charge of the deportation of Polish Jews. However, the playwright's attempt at stimulating more critical self-reflection in discourse about the Nazi past was largely unsuccessful. The majority of critics saw the play as a memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and/or as a celebration of the spirit of humanism exemplified by the character of Janusz Korczak.
