Abstract:
Views the discourse on the Jews of the 6th-century bishop Grégoire de Tours, presented in his historical and hagiographic writings, as a continuation of that of the evangelists and the Church fathers. Grégoire compares Jews with pagans, stating that both are idolators in need of conversion. However, he attributes Judaism with specific traits and associates it with paganism mainly in order to present both as enemies of Christianity and the Church. He also compares Jews with Arian heretics, stating that they brought God's vengeance upon themselves for their violence against Catholics. Nevertheless, Jews, as opposed to Arians, do not proselytize, and they are portrayed as less severely heretic. Argues that this comparison served to convince Catholic readers that their religion is the true one. Just as "the Jews" designate the enemies of Christ in the Gospel of St John, so Grégoire depicts them as the negative image of the Catholic. The Jews are materialistic liars, partners of the devil, and criminals. Concludes that Grégoire does not attempt to portray the real Jews of his time, but presents them, as well as the pagans and the heretics, as three symbolic figures of the enemy of the true faith.
