Abstract:
Discusses poems by Shtrigler (b. 1919), a Yiddish writer and journalist from Zamość, apparently written in Buchenwald between August 1944-April 1945 and in the months immediately following the war. Based on eyewitness accounts, concludes that the poems written in Buchenwald were for children, and were occasionally sung at performances of the camp's cultural underground. Includes Hebrew translations of some of the poems, which focus on Jewish suffering and on hope for a better future.
